From Cowgirl to Cali and everything in between, you can always trust copper to make a statement. Rich, vibrant, and a little bit fiery, it's no surprise it's become one of the hottest hair trends of 2024! Whether you're going for a deep, sultry shade or a bright, sun-kissed hue, copper hair offers endless possibilities for anyone looking to add a touch of warmth and personality to their look.
Renowned Australian colourist and Foil Me Ambassador, Sheree Knobel, is known around the country for her iconic colour transformations – and her copper creations are certainly no exception. In this blog, Sheree shares her top tips for achieving the perfect copper, so you can get the vibrant, long-lasting results your guests deserve!
Sheree’s Copper Tips
Preparation is Key!
When it comes to copper (or ANY colour for that matter), preparation is everything. Sheree emphasises the importance of lifting to the right level before applying your target colour.
“When you are pre-lightening, you would lift to an orange or yellow-orange to support your target colour. If you lift lighter, for example to a yellow, you will need to fill the hair to support your copper base. If you lift to an orange or yellow-orange, the pigment is already there so you don’t need to fill,” says Sheree.
To Bleach or Not to Bleach?
Ah, the age-old question! Bleaching can add stunning dimension or lift darker base colours, but it’s not always the answer. So, how do you know when it’s the right time to reach for the bleach?
Sheree explains, “The only time I’ll use bleach when creating coppers is if they have artificial colour in the hair that needs to be lifted out, or I’m wanting to create lighter tones using some balayage.”
Understanding Copper Shades: Cowgirl Copper vs. Cali Copper
Copper comes in many shades, each with its own unique charm. Two of the most popular variations right now are Cowgirl Copper and Cali Copper. But what’s the difference?
Cowgirl Copper: “Cowgirl is a caramel copper that sits between copper and brunette. It’s rich with strong copper tones containing no gold. Its brunette undertones keep it from looking glowy or fluoro, and it sits on the darker side.”
Cali Copper: “Cali copper is a lighter, more golden copper. It still oozes caramel to tan undertones, making it a super wearable tone for everyone. Golden shimmer foils give this copper a beachy and bright feel, making it the perfect tone for summer.”
